July 6, 2015 – weekly land trust news

Hope your 4th of July weekend included some natural solace. Here’s the serene Summit Lake near Mt. Hood over the weekend.  Neighbors included nighthawks, hermit thrushes, western tanagers, and peaceful campers.

COLT’s weekly land trust news

July 6th, 2015

Hi folks.

Belated happy 4th, and hope everyone enjoyed their extended weekends.

We are looking forward to seeing those who can make it at COLT’s upcoming board meeting this week at Wallowa Lake. Kelley sent out the agenda and board packet to board members last week. If you didn’t receive the email and would like an emailed copy, just let me know.

You may have received LTA’s latest issue of Saving Land, which included an article on the syndication of easement tax deductions. Next Tuesday the 14th at 12pm, the Alliance is offering a 30 min conference call on this matter for members. They will provide more context regarding land trusts that have been approached about deals involving the sale of federal tax deductions of conservation easement donations that involve overvaluation. Additionally, we understand that the Treasury Department has proposed restrictive regulations on conservation easement donations to address these deals.

If you are interested in joining the call, please email Artis Freye at the Alliance if you’d like to join. Otherwise, COLT staff will be joining the call and will report back to our membership anything that is helpful in understanding this complicated area of tax law.

It was a quiet news week for land trusts, so please see the humble offerings we have for you below.

Wishing everyone a great week, and see some of you in the Wallowas this week,

       –Mike
