May 8, 2017: State of the Lands, legislative hearings, and more

COLT’s weekly land trust news

Monday May 8th, 2017

As you may have seen from last week, our 2016 State of the Lands Report is out!
And be sure to come to our release party on May 18th at Migration Brewery.

Hi everyone,

With apologies for the erratic nature of these weekly news emails of late, I’m happy to send along today’s news for your enjoyment.

Three things first off:

First, there are two legislative hearings tomorrow (May 9th) you should be aware of:

  • SB 327Restoring Recreational Immunity
  • SB 181 – Relating to exemption from taxation for property of certain charitable institutions
    • This unfortunate bill would require nonprofits who have property exempt from taxation to report annually to their local assessor on the use of the property in relation to the organization’s charitable purpose.
    • COLT is working closely with the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and others to oppose this bill for a number of reasons (See NAO’s recent email on this bill).
    • We will be offering testimony at tomorrow’s hearing, and will share it with you in next week’s news.
    • If this bill concerns your land trust, please consider submitting testimony as well.

Second, we now have many of the materials from the 2017 Land Camp up online for your enjoyment:

Finally, we hope many of you will be able to join our upcoming State of the Lands Release party! May 18th, 2017 5:30-7:30pm at Migration Brewing.

And be sure to take a look at the State of the Lands report as well! We have great stories from land trusts across the state, as well as the latest update on our collective impact.

All the best,

Mike Running
Communication and Outreach Manager
