Uniting Oregonians in the shared care of lands and waters

The Oregon Lands and People Project is a historic initiative uniting Oregonians in the shared care of the lands and waters that sustain life, communities, and livelihoods across the state.

The Project was founded in 2024 by the Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts, the Land Trust Alliance and the Oregon Community Foundation to build new bridges between people and organizations caring for Oregon’s lands and waters.

The project is unique. People and organizations collaborate through a statewide, collective action effort to strengthen the capabilities, leadership alignment, and resource pathways Oregon needs to keep ecosystems, communities, and economies resilient and life‑giving for generations. Individual donors, donor advised fundholders, and foundations invest in the work through the Oregon Lands and People Fund at the Oregon Community Foundation — with $2.5 million raised and growing.

The effort is enabling coordinated capacity building, the development of shared priorities, and the deepening of trusted relationships that create the conditions for collective action at the scale of ecological, cultural, and economic need.

THE VISION
Oregon is a place where people and nature flourish together through shared responsibility for the lands and waters that sustain all life across generations.
Shared responsibility is a statewide consensus

Oregonians consistently affirm their commitment to caring for the state’s lands, waters and wildlife–seeing each as a moral responsibility, an economic priority, and a focus that deserves greater public investment.

Oregonians believe:

Believe we have a moral responsibility to protect natural areas and habitats for the plants, fish, and wildlife that need them to survive

77%

Believe having clean air and water and undeveloped open space are critical to keeping Oregon’s economy strong

50%

Believe too little (only 2.7%) of Oregon's general fund is spent on natural resources like parks, wildlife, farmland, forestry, and water quality
