By: Kelcie Smolin Grega

Applications for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2028 Forest Legacy Program are now open! The federal Forest Legacy program is administered by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) and provides competitive grant funding for the protection of private forestlands through conservation easements or fee title acquisitions.

Each year, the Oregon Department of Forestry solicits applications from eligible entities through a competitive, merit-based project selection process coordinated through the U.S. Forest Service. Please visit the ODF website for additional information and to view the FY28 application instructions.

Timeline: Eligible applicants should reach out to Christina Helige (christina.n.helige@odf.oregon.gov) by May 15th, 2026 to schedule a pre-application consultation, the first step in the process!

FY28 Forest Legacy applications are due by June 15th, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria: Forest Legacy projects must be located within a Forest Legacy area and meet goals outlined within Oregon’s Forest Action Plan. In addition, projects must be at least 75% forested, privately-owned, and be sponsored by a state agency, land trust, or conservation organization
